Northern

Urban
Missions Adventure
Transform
your life while sharing the light of Christ. During a year-long adventure
in Anchorage, Alaska, you will encounter Jesus like never before, build a
life-long faith and be equipped for effective ministry - wherever life takes
you.
- Northern
Lights is an intensive discipleship and ministry experience in an urban and
cross cultural setting designed to encourage participants to develop
in personal character, to cultivate a living relationship with God, and to
develop their unique individual gifts and callings in God. Cross-cultural
exposure and living in community are important aspects of the adventure.
- The
desired outcomes for those who participate in Northern Lights are to:
- grow
in holiness
- experience
wholeness in Christ
- cultivate
spiritual gifts and be equipped for ministry
- cultivate
a passion for demonstrating the love of Christ
- live
a life of eternal significance
- Northern
Lights will combine teaching, reading, discussion, reflection, mentoring and
hands-on ministry involvement to help you grow in wholeness with Christ
while being equipped as a life-long disciple.
- Young
adults, with at least a high school diploma or equivalent, and who desire to
strengthen their Christian faith while developing tools for life-long
ministry, are invited to apply for Northern Lights.
- Participants
will arrive in Anchorage, Alaska, by August 1.
The experience concludes in mid-June.
A two-week break at Christmas time allows participants to visit
family and friends, if desired.
- During
the experience, Northern Lights participants will take part in an overseas
mission trip lasting approximately two weeks.
Because of this trip, all participants must possess a US passport.
- Participants
will live in apartment units, likely sharing bedrooms and common space.
Living in community will be an important aspect of the experience.
The apartments are fully furnished.
- Costs:
- Each
participant will pay $7,250 to Anchorage Free Methodist Church to cover
most of the costs of their Northern Lights involvement.
- This
fee covers housing, food allowance, program costs and travel expenses
associated with the overseas mission trip.
- Participants
will be responsible for their own travel expenses to and from Anchorage,
incidental expenses, and personal excursions.
- It
is highly recommended that participants seek out financial partners who
will help to contribute toward their program fee expenses.
You may be able to establish a scholarship fund through
your local church to help facilitate donations.
- The
total fee is due as follows: $250
non-refundable deposit due upon acceptance to the program; $2,500 due by
July 1; $2,500 due by November 1; $2,000 due by January 15.
- In
order to be involved in the community, it is anticipated that participants
will be employed for a few hours each day at a neighborhood elementary
school, providing playground supervision, or other duties.
Participants must be eligible for employment.
Each participant will earn a small salary from this employment.
- Participants
will work in a group setting with one another, participate in the
congregational life of Anchorage Free Methodist Church, grow from weekly
one-on-one meetings with Northern Lights guides and develop a support
relationship with a Life Line – a person of the participant’s own
choosing who will encourage and help the participant process their
experience.
- Before
arriving in Alaska, each participant will develop a team of 10-20 prayer
supporters. You’ll need to
communicate with your prayer team monthly so they can pray for you
specifically.
